Don’t be afraid, I feel it too…

I only noticed this while making the gif set and had to go back and watch again but in the third gif, where Kylo is telling Rey that ‘You imagine an ocean…’ He looks away, a slight smile forming on his lips and he looks at her with…admiration(?) almost. Or perhaps wry amusement.

I don’t know, I’m probably reading to much into it but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Casting and filming choices and reylo

Originally started as a rambling response to something @oldadastra said:

“I’ve been wanting to write something about this idea, but it keeps boiling down to a quip about Adam Driver: an actor so good at communicating sensuality that all he has to do is take off his hat, lean in, whisper the most clichéd talk-dirty-to-me line in western literature, and everyone in the audience is convinced that some kind of sex has just taken place.”

Yeah.

Look at this.  Just look at this eye-fucking.  We’re pregnant now.  You, me, the goat, that thatched roof.  All pregnant.

Adam Driver got Kylo Ren without auditioning.  I believe he was the only new cast member who did not have to audition.  The audition was J. J. Abrams convincing Driver he would be able to collaborate on an interesting villain.

It is freaking rare for an actor not to audition, especially, like, a 29-year-old one who has been acting all of 5 or 6 years.  They put him at the top billing for new cast members.  They wanted him bad.

Why court a highly sensual actor’s actor if you want a flat villain?

Also, let’s talk about how they shot him.  Adam Driver looks very different depending on how you shoot him.  That’s a freaking gift as an actor and a model.  He can look like this:

image

Now, I like how he looks, but this is not a shot meant to flatter him.

This is from Frances Ha.  It’s from a scene where they’re getting dinner, and (mild spoilers, since it’s not really a romance movie anyway) they don’t end up together.  It’s not meant to convey romance.

Frances Ha’s supposed to be shot in a more “realistic” style (it’s very cinema verite), but even when filming in that style they manipulate how he looks depending on the scene.  This him right after Frances and her friend discuss him as potential boyfriend material:

image

Made-up, face to camera, even lighting. Those are all choices.

You do not just point and shoot a camera.  The physical set-up of the camera and the scene is a choice.

An example of lens choices on the same woman.  Different angles because the photographer would have had to stand closer or farther from her to get her in focus:

image

Same lady.  A photographer’s choices contribute way more to how someone looks than you might think.  (Also, stop freaking out over how different you look on camera versus in the mirror.  It’s the camera.  Seriously.)

I cannot emphasize enough: in filmmaking, how your actors look is a choice.  And not just one you make at casting.  So this was intentional:

You cannot tell me that helmet taking off shot wasn’t planned to make him beautiful.  Absolutely not.

That man was made-up, hair did, glamor lighting, and he worked it.  That pout.  That smize.  That brow, just right.  He can get it.  It took a village to make that man look like that.  They had lighting rehearsals, I fucking promise you.  Someone had to set up shit to bounce light off of him (or a double), and moved it around ‘n shit.   They took measurements and choreographed where he’d be when he stood.  There are dozens of man-hours invested in getting this shot to look this way.

Why?  They didn’t pick a conventionally handsome actor, and they didn’t want one.  But they wanted him on point, as good as Adam Driver can look. Why?
